Only in America!

Some entertainment from our recent trip to the Marshfield Fair. For the record, Sarah Jessica PORKER won the race. And the MC for the event, yeah he double as a magician in the afternoon show. I guess these fair/carnie types have to multi-task to find good work these days.

We are the Champions!

Crazy props to the HBSP softballers for taking home the Harvard Cup last night, beating Facilities in a hard fought 12-10 victory at the Cambridge Common.  Game ball goes to Stephen A, who on the eve of being named to his first All-Star game, pulled a Derek Lowe, getting the win in all three playoff victories!  The win was the culmination of an improbable playoff run after a so-so .500 season where game after game, it was a challenge even fielding a full roster.  But once we were in the "win or go home" portion of the season we turned it on.

Despite falling behind by 5 runs in the top of the 1st, and a boneheaded move by yours truly trying to stretch a leadoff double into a triple (making the 1st out at third) in the bottom of the 1st, we rallied back, chipped away with some timely hitting by the usual suspects Matt O, Moon, GT, Theo & Company.  Great team defense led by the very busy J. Savage in left field kept the lead intact and we went into the top of the 7th with a five run cushion.  Facilities didn't go quietly though, eventually bringing the go ahead run to the plate with two outs.  Crack....but not enough, as the final line drive settled into my glove at short, the first thing I heard was GT whooping it up as he jaunted in from shortfield, a very satisfied long time Harvard softballer, ecstatic about his first championship in 13 years.

Let's all drink to that!!!

Keeping "the Old U" out of "the new U"

Larry Coker made a huge statement yesterday by suspending four players for the season opener vs. Florida State.  As a Canes fan, it disappoints me that players on the team exhibited behavior that caused Coker to hand out the suspensions, but it also makes me proud that he had the balls to do it, especially for such an important game.

I have defended the University of Miami for years, at times til I was blue in the face and literally screaming in restaurant bars at friends that dared to say my favorite program was shady.  I think every college program has problematic players, there's just no way a coaching staff can truly weed out the bad apples during the recruiting process.  However, what makes a coach worthy is what he does to discipline the players that become problems once they get there.  Coker has shown time and time again that he will stick to his guns (no pun intended) regardless of how big the upcoming game is.  Other coaches feel differently and let their players play when they shouldn't, but I digress.

The Canes may have fallen out of national title contention the last few years, but Coker is certainly doing a great job of sticking to his code of conduct, regardless of the impact it has on the playing field.  And I won't even go into the whole Willie Williams wants to transfer thing, that would be too long a post.
