Blind Squirrel finds a nut!
Okay, not to take anything away from Florida State's win over Miami , but what the F....I am sure Seminole fans will even say Miami lost it more than they won it. That was one of the most frustrating sporting events to watch on television, ever!
Let me clear my throat:
- Devin Hester needs to stop reading all his Press Clippings and get his head in the freakin game. Because he seemed to have his head up his ass most of Monday night. Or maybe Deion just paid him off to look like a complete jackass on punt returns all night. I hope he was just trying a bit too hard to make a game changing play and snaps out of it next game.
- The Miami Offensive Line should be ashamed of themselves, and Art Kehoe (O-Line Coach) should be embarrassed to walk on campus this week. Pathetic....9 sacks. Although 2-3 of them should be put on the young QB's shoulders, as he should have thrown it away rather than take the sack.
- The long snapper...you know who does it on your team? Its a very important job, Canes fans know that all too well by now. The holder is kind of important too, looks like its time for some more reps in practice there boys!
Looking on the bright side:
- Kyle Wright showed poise and promise. He is going to be a great Quarterback. Unfortunately, as he showed lots of potential during that final drive. He also showed he was very inexperienced, taking that costly sack on 2nd and Goal from the 1-2. That hurt. But he and Olsen could be the new Dorsey/Shockey Combo for the next couple years.
- The Defense is damn good again. Although Jennings dropping that easy INT kind of stung!
- Tyrone Moss looks much faster this year, after losing a few LBS in the off season, thank god.
Gotta give FSU credit. They took advantage of a costly UM turnover to score a TD early and got another field goal from good field position, and that would be all they would need. And their constant blitzing obviously did enough to contain UM. And hell...they scored more points than the Canes, bottom line. Just like the Red Sox had to beat the Yankees eventually, the Noles had to beat the Canes, and they did....for the first time since 1999. (I didn't even know my wife when that happened!!!)
Lastly, Gary Danielson is god awful, and Musburger doesn't exactly make him sound any better. At one point when Tyrone Moss was clearly having trouble with his hamstring, and being stretched by the trainer, Danielson wondered "I'm not sure if its a problem with the ankle or the hamstring" Wow...cutting edge color commentating there Gary. And don't even get me started on Jack Arute on the sidelines. Okay...that's enough.
Thank god for the Sox, and BIG PAPI! And, this just in THE YANKEES LOSE, THE YANKEES LOSE.....THEEEEEE YANKEES LOSE!!!!
"Blind Squirrel Finds a Nut"
"Not to take anything away from Florida State's win, but..."
"Just like the Sox had to beat the Yanks..."
Two words: Sour. Grapes.
You're seriously comparing the Sox history with the Yankees with a six season losing streak? And is it somehow less of a loss if you "beat yourselves"? Not that it matters much, because the scoreboard had "FSU 10, Miami 7" on it at the end and not "MIAMI 10, MIAMI 7". So I figure Florida State had something to do with it.
It was an ugly game offensively on both sides. If Miami can't win a game like that, then their season should be over and they should be out of a National Championship picture. What are they going to do when they play a team that can actually pass the ball?
And yes, I know that technically they aren't out of the picture, but realistically they are. (Somebody's going to go undefeated, and a bunch of teams will have one loss. Miami still has to beat VT and beat FSU in the ACC Championship to be considered and they if they take a random loss to the North Carolinas of the world, they're done.)
Look at it like Bobby Bowden and most realistic fans do: "Shit happens. It sucks. Been there. Welcome to the club." I think you've taken six years of "shit happens" and turned it into "Miami is so much better than Florida State, we've totally got their number" inside your head. Miami was never more than a fluke better than Florida State, they just happened to catch a bunch of breaks in a row.
And I didn't find the game that frustrating to watch at all. ;-)

Hey now..you forgot some quotes!
- Gotta give FSU credit
- And their constant blitzing obviously did enough to contain UM
- And hell...they scored more points than the Canes, bottom line
Come on now, just because I said just like the Sox had to beat the Yanks, etc...that doesn't mean I was saying the streaks were the same, I was just saying it had to happen (FSU winning). And I don't think you can take 6 consecutive victories and claim they were all horseshoe in the ass lucky. There was one blowout and a couple other easy wins for the Canes.
Lastly, I think if you blocked out the scoreboard from your view and just watched how poorly both teams played, you would be frustrated. Only reason you weren't frustrated with the game is because you were content with the Noles leading. (I would think at least)
Lastly (again)...of course there are sour grapes man. There's got to be. Miami dominated every statistic but two (sacks and points). In some ways they played better than some of the games when they actually BEAT FSU. Its not like you can say hands down that the Noles deserved to win, christ a game like that should end in a tie.
GO BC...beat FSU!

Oh, and another thing. I never want to look at anything like Bobby Bowden does. Like Gilly said on 27 Redux, the guy doesn't even know his own quarterback's name! And in post game interviews he was asking who made field goals, etc. What a joker!

Sorry man...I was actually on the phone for work while trying to fire back at you. To answer your question, I think it is MORE OF A LOSS if you "beat yourselves", so that's where the sour grapes are coming from.
Okay, now I have to go get my teeth drilled.

I probably won't get to all my counterpoints, but here are some of them.
1. Three of the six Miami wins against FSU in the past were "horseshoe in the ass" lucky (the three missed FGs). That's all that separates these teams from being 3-3 since 1999.
2. The "credit" you gave FSU wasn't really credit at all. Yes, we know they scored more points and they played good D. But your overall message was "they didn't beat us, we gave it to them". That's fine, it's your opinion... but I don't know how you could tell that from Game 1. If they play like that against every good opponent this year, will they suck or will they just be very generous? Because they're going to play better teams than Florida State.
3. Bobby Bowden's in his 70s, so I don't want to be doing anything like him either (forgetting things, peeing 10 times a night, taking Metamucil, getting colonoscopies, or any of the other things that come with aging). But it's not really fair to say that until I get to my 70s, because I might be bedridden, drooling, and wishing I could do everything like Bowden. Fact is, he's arguably the best college football coach ever - hardly a joker. And if you go back and read that article you posted, nothing indicates that he forgot the quarterback's name. Journalists put names in quotes all the time to indicate that the speaker referred to him by something other than his name. He probably said, "We decided to throw HIM in there" or "OUR BACKUP".
4. Or maybe he doesn't know his name, in which case your Canes got beat by a senile old man.
5. If I blocked out the scoreboard, I still would've known that Miami only scored once and FSU scored twice.
6. Go BC! Who cares? FSU just won it's biggest matchup of the year, got the monkey off it's backs, and wrecked the week (and possibly the season) for Miami fans. FSU started the year ranked 14, worst ranking in a long time. They're not going to win it all, so taking UM down is probably the highlight. And it's a good one at that. NFL season starts on Sunday, which means I won't watch another college game until Bowl Season so it won't matter to me either way. I'm glad this game happened before Thursday so I could watch it in person.

Kull, I think the ref is calling this one. Riv has pretty much beat you down to Chinatown! I'd give up on this topic and go after him on another topic. I'll give you the headline: "George W Bush is the best leader in the history of the world..."
Posted by: Moon | September 08, 2005 at 07:54 AM
Well, I guess if anyone knows about getting "beat down to Chinatown" by Rivers...its you. But I don't go out like that.
1) 3 of UM's wins were "horseshoe in the ass lucky". Hmm, not so sure about that. Let me re-cap the last six meetings:
a) 2000: the FSU kicker missed a 49 yarder that would have tied the game. That's pretty much a desperation kick for them. No luck there.
b) 2001: 49-27 Miami wins at Doak. Total domination, Rutgers gave Miami a tougher game that year.
c) 2002: 28-27 - Wide Left...I'll give you that one, this was one of the best college football games ever!
d) 2003: 22-14 - Miami had a 19-0 lead in the 3rd/4th quarter, I believe FSU's last 7 points were in mop up time. FSU blames the loss on the rain and wet field.
e) 2003-2004 Orange Bowl - 16-14 - Miami does the difficult, beats the same team twice in the same year, and there was a missed FG.
f) 2004: 16-10 OT - great game
I am not denying the fact that Miami won 3 games due to missed field goals (one of which was a 49 yarder). But here's the thing, FSU was in the position in all 3 of those games that it NEEDED a last second field goal to win or tie the game, very desperate situations if you asked me.
2) The credit I gave FSU was in deed legit. Shit, I think if Miami wound up scoring on that drive I would have been thinking "man that was a gift win...but I'll take it"
3) Actually I was quoting GILLY on 27 Redux about the not knowing QB's names. The article just shows how he didn't really know any details of the game. Because he doesn't really coach, he is a figurehead...that wanders around the sideline saying "gawd dang it...that sunbitch just missed another field goal didn't he?"
4) Miami got beat by MICKEY ANDREWS, not Bobby Bowden.
5) Obviously...but you still would have been frustrated. I mean, if you enjoy watching quality football that is. If you like sloppy football, I am sure you would be frustration free there.
6) Miami will be better than FSU this year. And probably have a re-match in the ACC title game. And then we'll see if FSU can do what Miami did two years ago and beat the same team twice. But this banter loses all its fun because you are bailing to the NFL anyway.
Lost in all of this, my main point of my initial post was to rip my own team. Mostly the O-Line and Devin Hester. I believe I did that and also fumed about how Miami out played FSU yet still managed to lose, giving credit to FSU and their swarming defense and ability to capitalize on a big turnover...that was the game. I'd be interested to check some FSU fan sites to see how they feel about their squad's performance. Sure, they're psyched they finally beat Miami again, but I bet they're not too happy.
Lastly...Moon, I can't believe you even had the ability to type those words. I know you were just joking, but it must have left your keyboard burning a bit...no?
Posted by: Kull | September 08, 2005 at 08:34 AM
Oooh, good opening rip on me! I never saw that coming...really...I swear!
And yes, it was difficult to type those words. I thought my keyboard may melt, that's why I waited to do it on the work computer!! Hopefully Riv doesn't choke on his morning coffee when he reads it. Just kidding, man, take deep breaths...in with the good, out with the bad!!!
Posted by: Moon | September 08, 2005 at 08:59 AM
Well come on man, it was an easy one. Like a pitch middle in to Big Papi, right there for the taking.
I think he'll be okay with that quote. But good call on using your work keyboard to type it! Ha ha!

just to clear somthing up. the Bowden quote, was damn near exactly what he said. he said it, i laughed and then me and the Dave (kid i work with and big sports fan, big cornhuskers and cubs fan, so alot of ripping of the other guys favorite teams) talked about the quote the next morning and he was the one who brought it up. just clearing that up for the debate. Proceed!
ps Dave is a big Celts fan too! (from North Dakota thats why he is all over the place)

This "debate" is still going on? I didn't check in at all yesterday...
"But here's the thing, FSU was in the position in all 3 of those games that it NEEDED a last second field goal to win or tie the game, very desperate situations if you asked me."
(hmmm, that sounds familiar)
Kull, I grant you all points - there's no fight left in me. Miami has always been better than FSU, and of course they were the other night too. Let's not let field goals that miss by an inch... or, say, a three point loss alter that "fact".
I will hold onto the most important point though: FSU 10, Miami 7... and that Miami is one nail away from having the coffin nailed shut on it's season. Throw all the stats, opinions, and theories you want at that... it won't change what happened Monday.
Whether it was Bowden, Mickey Andrews, Julie Andrews, or Andrew Ridgely (the other guy from WHAM!) that beat Miami is really irrelevant. Imagine the shoe being on the other foot now - FSU loses and I come out with "Miami beat Mickey Andrews! They didn't beat Bobby Bowden." How far would that fly here? But I as a Florida State fan, I fully understand the desire to find some tangent that explains why the 22 guys on "my" team didn't beat the 22 guys on the other team.
As for Bowden... let's see what any of you guys are doing at his age. I doubt it will be anything half as good as Bowden. The guy called his backup QB "the other guy". Yeah, he's gone. He should be strapped to a bed somewhere. He doesn't know where he is. Again, the opinion doesn't change the facts. Right now, he's 1-0 and the supremely intelligent, physically fit, and stunningly handsome Larry Coker is 0-1. It defies logic.
Just a quick note about that too. In high school, my coach was a mean prick in 100 different ways. When I allowed a passed ball (or didn't stop a wild pitch was more like it), he'd call me "catcher" for the rest of the game and all week. (like, "Hey Catcher, what the hell happened there?!" or "Catcher! You should've done better there.") It used to drive my nuts. So, maybe (just maybe) there's a little mental gamesmanship going on between the old man and his young QBs...like, if they're not going to play well, then they're not worth him remembering their name.
Of course, I have no way of knowing that... but it's just as likely a theory as the one about him being almost a vegetable.

Wow...that is an interesting theory on the coaching strategy. Could very well be what it was for all we know. More importantly, from now on whenever I see you Jeff, I will refer to you only as "Catcher", nothing more!
Miami hasn't always been better than FSU, there was a stretch in the mid to late 90's that FSU just dominated the series!
Debate over, and just to clear things up. Jeff and I discussed a lot of the game in a more reasonable manner via IM's the other day. I just had to try and ge one last word in, but as we all know...."Catcher" always get his last two cents in!

How would I know what's the "last two cents" and what isn't? Is there a way to tell in advance if someone's going to comment after you?
[Please, nobody answer this... because as we all know, it's important that I get the last two cents in. Just email me if you know the answer to my question.]
BTW: You can close a thread to comments if you don't want anybody to keep commenting. Then the last two cents are all you.
